Post-Operative Instructions after Extraction

ACTIVITY: Reduce activity on the day of extraction then increase as tolerated. Avoid heavy exercise (running, aerobics) for one week after surgical removal of impacted teeth or major surgery.

BLEEDING: Bite firmly on the folded gauze for ONE HOUR (or until home and resting comfortably). Some seepage of blood is common and may persist into the next day. If excessive or prolonged bleeding continues, bite on another folded gauze for an additional 30 minutes. If this is not successful, try biting on a moist tea bag.

SWELLING: Swelling reaches a maximum at about 48 hours. Therefore, apply an ice pack to the surgical area “on and off every 20 minutes” the day of and the day after surgery (2 days). After 2 days start doing a warm saline rinse 4-5 times a day.

PAIN: Take the pain medication that was prescribed for you with food. In cases where no prescription was written you may take 2 tablets of Tab Dolo 650 mg or Tab Ketorol DT (if tolerated) every 4 hours for the slight discomfort. Severe pain in the lower jaw occurring about 4 days after operation usually indicates delayed bone healing (“dry socket”).

DIET: Drink only liquids until the numbness has worn off then eat soft bland foods. Be sure to drink large amounts of fluids (not through a straw!). Avoid eating hot or warm meals for first 36 hrs. after surgery. Continue to add nonscratchy foods until you can comfortably return to a normal diet. Antibiotics are best taken DURING MEALS. 2. Do not use a drinking straw. Drink straight from the cup.

3.Do not smoke. Spitting, the use of a straw, smoking, and poking can dislodge the blood clot that is forming, and will cause bleeding from the area. Also, smoking can increase the chances of an infection

4.Keep fingers and tongue away from the surgical area.

5.FOR BLEEDING: Some minor bleeding is expected after implant surgery. It will usually subside quickly, and stop within an hour or two after surgery. A little oozing is normal and may persist for several hours, Upper implants may occasionally trigger some bleeding from the nose, this is normal and will stop quickly. 1) Keep gauze on the surgical area with some pressure for 60 to 90 minutes. 2) Remove the gauze after 60 to 90 minutes, and replace it with a new piece of gauze if you are still bleeding. It is important to make sure the gauze is directly on the surgical site. Firm pressure for another hour should stop the bleeding.

Post Operative Instructions After Scaling

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease. The purpose of the treatment is to remove bacterial plaque and tartar from around teeth and under the gum line, which is causing bone loss. The goal is to produce clean, healthy teeth and roots, which will promote healing of the inflammation and infection that causes gum disease.

After scaling and root planing, avoid eating anything on the area being treated for two hours or until the anesthetic has worn off completely (IF ANAESTHESIA IS GIVEN). It is easy to bite or burn your cheek, tongue or lip while numb.

Avoid any hard foods such as tortilla chips, potato chips, popcorn, or seeds for the next several days. To help soothe the area, rinse your mouth 2-3 times a day with warm salt water rinses. If you are prescribed Peridex/Chlorhexidine, use as directed. Resume your home care regimen of brushing twice a day with a soft bristled toothbrush and daily flossing immediately, but be gentle with the area rcently treated.

Your gum health must be maintained with proper home care, as instructed, and regular dental visits. You may use a WaterPik if recommended. It is not unusual for the teeth to be more sensitive to hot or cold temperatures, and/or sweets. This is normal. This occurs as the gum tissue heals and shrinks in size and should gradually resolve in a few weeks with proper home care.

Consistently brushing two to times daily with sensitivity toothpaste .Avoid toothpastes with “whitening” or baking soda, as this will contribute to the problem. If sensitivity continues or is severe, professional application of a desensitizing agent may be required.

Refrain from smoking for 24 to 48 hours after scaling and root planing as tobacco will delay healing of the tissues. You can expect to notice less redness, less bleeding, and less swelling of your gum tissues. Your teeth may feel smoother and your mouth will taste and feel better.

Post Operative Instructions After Root Canal Treatment

The purpose of the root canal treatment is to remove diseased tissue from inside of the root and seal the root end. Depending on each case, endodontic treatment may be completed in one, two or three appointments. Once started, it is important to complete the root canal therapy. After your root canal therapy has been completed: Your endodontic, or root canal, therapy will usually maintain your tooth and relieve the pain you may have been experiencing.

Please avoid biting on the tooth for the next few days. It is not unusual for the tooth to be tender after a root canal, and healing occurs more quickly if you do not chew on it immediately. Also, avoid biting your lip, cheek, and tongue while anesthetized (numb) since this may cause damage to them.

If your tooth was in pain prior to starting the treatment, it will take up to a week or more for the tooth get back to normal, your tooth may be quite sore for a few days after the appointment.

This will be alleviated with time; it may take as much as a week or more. Should you have pain that you cannot tolerate, abnormal swelling, fever, or significant pain, please call our office. We will suggest medication or other steps to make you more comfortable.

How should I take care of my tooth? You may continue regular dental hygiene regimen. Avoid biting or chewing on the tooth during the first few days. Avoid sticky foods like caramel, jellybeans, or gum since they may loosen or remove the temporary filling, which was placed. If the temporary filling feels loose or completely falls out, please call our office. It may need to be replaced. We usually place a temporary filling in the tooth, so it is important that you schedule promptly for a permanent restoration because the temporary filling will eventually allow bacteria to leak in and contaminate the tooth. Failure to complete the final restoration in a timely manner may result in the need for re-treatment of the root canal(s) in your tooth at an additional cost or possibly severe pain and infection or loss of the tooth due to fracture of the tooth and/or recontamination from leakage. Will I need to return for additional treatments? Once endodontic therapy is completed your tooth may require periodic examination, usually 6-12 months. This allows us to make sure the tooth has is healing properly. Please call our office if your tooth feels unusual or discomfort persists after completion. Fortunately, most root canals heal with about a 90-95% success rate.
